The Appalachian Backroads® Series
The Appalachian Backroads® series is a fine art exploration of secondary roads, intersections, and transitional landscapes throughout Appalachia and East Tennessee—spaces that exist between destinations and often go unnoticed.
Photographed over time, the work favors endurance over idealism, stillness over drama, and permanence shaped by gradual change. These images are made slowly and with intention, allowing the landscape to reveal itself without intervention or embellishment.
Guided by restraint, continuity, and respect for land, history, and lived experience, the camera is not used to interpret, but to witness. The result is a cohesive body of work rooted in observation rather than spectacle.
Photographic Language
Visually, the work relies on natural light, measured contrast, and deliberate composition. Subtle color palettes and tonal consistency create a sense of pause and spatial awareness, encouraging sustained looking rather than immediate consumption.
These photographs are designed to be lived with over time.

Artist Statement — Appalachian Backroads®
I am drawn to places that exist just beyond urgency — roads less traveled, landscapes passed without pause, moments that do not ask to be noticed.
Appalachian Backroads® is a fine art photography collection that observes the quiet presence of Appalachia and East Tennessee through working roads, layered histories, restrained light, and an enduring sense of place. These photographs are made slowly and with intention, allowing the landscape to speak without interruption, direction, or embellishment.
Rather than documenting landmarks or pursuing nostalgia, the work focuses on observation. The photographs engage with what remains when spectacle is removed — subtle shifts in light, the rhythm of roadways, and spaces shaped by time rather than attention.
This work is contemplative by design.
The backroads function as visual lines through the landscape — markers of memory, solitude, and duration. Each image offers a way of seeing that values restraint, patience, and continuity, inviting prolonged viewing rather than immediate consumption.
Each piece is created to exist as art: collected, displayed, and revisited over time.

Relationship to the Broader Practice
This collection informs all other aspects of my photographic work.
The discipline, pacing, and visual restraint present in Appalachian Backroads® are the same standards applied to my portrait, headshot, and commercial photography. The distinction lies in purpose rather than method — with fine art allowing space for duration, while commissioned work applies the same clarity in service of client goals.
