The Appalachian Backroads Series

The Appalachian Backroads® series is a fine art exploration of secondary roads, intersections, and transitional landscapes throughout Appalachia and East Tennessee—spaces that exist between destinations and often go unnoticed.

Photographed over time, the work favors endurance over idealism, stillness over drama, and permanence shaped by gradual change. These images are made slowly and with intention, allowing the landscape to reveal itself without intervention or embellishment.

Guided by restraint, continuity, and respect for land, history, and lived experience, the camera is not used to interpret, but to witness. The result is a cohesive body of work rooted in observation rather than spectacle.

Photographic Language

Visually, the work relies on natural light, measured contrast, and deliberate composition. Subtle color palettes and tonal consistency create a sense of pause and spatial awareness, encouraging sustained looking rather than immediate consumption.

These photographs are designed to be lived with over time.

Artist Statement — Appalachian Backroads®

I am drawn to places that exist just beyond urgency—roads less traveled, landscapes passed without pause, moments that do not ask to be noticed.

Appalachian Backroads® is my way of observing the quiet presence of Appalachia and East Tennessee: its working roads, layered histories, restrained light, and enduring sense of place. These fine art photographs are made slowly and with intention, allowing the landscape to speak without interruption or embellishment.

This work is neither nostalgic nor documentary in the traditional sense. It is contemplative.

The backroads become lines through the landscape—markers of memory, solitude, and time—offering a way of seeing that values restraint, attention, and duration.

Each piece is created to exist as art: collected, displayed, and revisited.
